Phaidon Press – Books of distinction

The launch of trade.phaidon.com represents another step in our ongoing relationship with Phaidon, one of the world’s leading publishers of books on the visual arts, that began with the redesign of their main ecommerce site, phaidon.com back in 2006.

The trade customer website extends the use of colour to signpost book categories in a simple yet visually striking DHTML interface. The use of standards compliant technologies means the site works not only on desktop PCs but also handheld devices including iPhone as used by the international sales teams.

To support the teams versions of the website were developed in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian.

TheTin balanced an ambitious creative brief and the high design values associated with Phaidon against the equally demanding technical and commercial objectives of increasing online sales.

TheTin’s strategy was to preserve the pleasure of browsing, which forms a key part of the purchasing experience for Phaidon’s design-conscious consumers, by creating a simple and uncluttered interface that is as visually appealing as it is functional.

The result is a sophisticated transactional website which retains Phaidon’s values of quality and beauty, while providing customers with an intuitive browsing and buying experience.

TheTin’s design employs the language of colour to signpost the different sections of the website. Customers are guided through Phaidon’s extensive list of titles covering everything from art, architecture, photography, design, performing arts, decorative arts, contemporary culture, fashion, film, travel, cookery and children’s books. Brand consistency is maintained by referencing the visual signatures used in Phaidon’s seasonal catalogue.

TheTin delivered the interface design in a series of 35 Illustrator templates that encompassed all levels of the browsing and buying experience, and consulted on design aspects of the HTML and CSS construction undertaken by a third party supplier, who developed the site content management and ecommerce infrastructure.
